1960 Gibson Les Paul Junior

The Gibson Les Paul Jr. is a solid body electric guitar that was introduced in 1954 as an affordable, entry level Les Paul. The goal for the Les Paul Jr. was to build a high-quality guitar that was still affordable. For this to happen, the Jr. was stripped down to the basics; one P-90 dog ear pickup in the bridge, one volume knob and tone knob and a sunburst finish on a flat-top "slab" mahogany body. However, because of its simplicity and distinguishable tone when played through a high gain amplifier, the Les Paul Junior became very popular in the 60s and even more so later in the 70's for professional use. It's still popular today! The P-90 pickup gave the guitar a distinct crunch desired by rock and blues players, including Jerry Garcia, Leslie West of Mountain, Luther Grosvenor (a.k.a. Ariel Bender) of Spooky Tooth and Mott the Hoople, and Johnny Thunders of The New York Dolls and The Heartbreakers. A Les Paul Junior also became John Lennon's main guitar of choice during his post-Beatles years.

In 1958, Gibson made a radical design change to the Les Paul Junior. This design change would later take on enormous importance. To accommodate player requests for more access to the top frets than the previous designs allowed, Gibson revamped the Junior with a new double-cutaway body shape. In addition, the Junior's fresh look was enhanced with a new cherry red finish,
